Keith Berger Memorial Race 30+ and P/1/2/3
Master30+
Wade, Ted, Matt, Paul and Me lined up for the 30+ race. Ted and Paul had just finished the 40+. Matt started the 40+ but was yanked from the race due to no signing his waiver or picking up his number. I tried to sign for him, but that was not allowed.
The race started with the standard salvo. Murat was the first to go, with me bridging up at the end of lap one. Several riders joined us, including Wade. The group was too large and suffered immediately. Within a few laps I found myself in a second, smaller, 9 rider group. Well this was the beginning of the end for the field. Our group was never caught again. Within a few laps there were only six of us. A few laps later there was only five: Murat, BJ Haas, Badger, Yarbrody, and me. We started gaining some serious time. With less than 15 laps to go, the group was down to four. The break was going very well, with everyone sharing pulls and primes. At one point our gap was 1:50. I was feeling great and thought that I had a good chance at this one. With 7 to go we were within striking distance to the back of the field. We chose not to lap the field. <5 laps, BJ started missing some pulls, making me a little nervous. Badger put a dig in with 4 to go, to test the waters. BJ was the one to suffer the most. Going into the bell lap we gapped BJ off the back. I played my cards all wrong, with leading the sprint out. First to overtake me was Bill, and within 20m to the line Badger overtook me. So it goes, 3rd Place, equaling my best result at the KB. Paul was active in the field, getting away and coming in with a small chase group. He can explain. So, I got 10$ prime and 55$ for the result. So, start putting your hands out. Thanks for the great team work today.
P/1/2/3
I’ll explain it quickly. A quick call to the line as the skies darkened. 1 dry lap and then the heavy rain started. We completed 7 or 8 laps before getting the 1 to go bell. So it goes, 15 minutes of racing. Within 10 minutes after ‘completing the race’ the sun came out and things started to dry out. So the race only cost ~2$/minute…….I think Mike the USCF official was a little quick on cancelling the race.
Awesome job getting in that break and with the good result Zane! Glad to see the form is coming along. This should give you some confidence going into the FSR.
Matty makes his season debut. Nice!! See you guys later. Oh yeah, good luck to you and Laura on Monday Wade.
Good job. I should have been up there too. I hesisted just that little bit when the others went after you and that was that. After your group was gone, I started a move with 2 others – we were chasing another two. We got brought back after 4 or 5 laps. Another big group with Pauly went with about 8 to go. Should have went with that too. I had my chance when the strongman from our earlier trio bridged solo with about 5 to go. I tried to get up to it with 4 to go but failed. On the last lap I attacked hard on the back stretch and stayed clear to the finish, again getting close to Pauly’s group, but lost ground as they wound up their sprint. Maybe 13th-15th place?
Sounds like they did pull the trigger too soonin the 1/2s. What’s with canceling a race because of rain? Was there lightening?
Ok gotta get some rest. We’re having our baby tomorrow! OK OK ok,Laura is. But I get to watch and pass out…
Good Luck Laura, Wade and Nate.
Nice Riding Zane! Sorry I couldn’t be there as well, but we were en route to the in laws in Ashbunrham, MA.
BTW, I have Spikes TT helmet for you, but we may need to talk about a hand-off. I was actually thinking about riding to the TT for warm-up. If so, I probably can’t haul the helmet with me. You are welcome to park and ride from here as well. It is ca 11 mi to the start of the TT.
Laura and Wade, I’m sure its a bit late, given that Laura’s scheduled to be induced in 30 min, But best of luck!
